Otters are a land-based mammal, although often seen in or near both fresh and coastal waters in Scotland.

The freshwater otters in The Great Trossachs Forest are mostly nocturnal, but it’s a real thrill if you catch sight of one - the streamlined brown body, with small head and ears, and long whiskers.

Scotland is a stronghold for the European otter, which has become rare elsewhere. Look out for them close to the loch shores.
